When a group of Confederate soldiers escape from a Yankee prison camp, they make plans to attack the town of Saint Albans, Vermont in retaliation for William T. Sherman's destructive march through Georgia and South Carolina. Posing as a Canadian businessman, Major Neal Benton (Van Heflin) mingles with the townsfolk in order to get the lay of the land, but soon finds himself drawn to an attractive widow (Anne Bancroft) and her young son.
