Set in Missouri at the close of the War Between the States, this film stars Gene Tierney as the legendary Belle Shirley, a member of the landed gentry of the South who refuses to take Southern defeat and the loss of her way of life gracefully. Upon meeting the Confederate guerilla, Sam Starr (Randolph Scott), she becomes his wife and partner in a desperate struggle to free Missouri from Yankee occupation.
